Full description

Sterling silver | 30x20 mm | 4 g

Silver cross-shaped pendant with a relief of Christ Crucified in a long decorated tunic. A tablet with a schematised engraving of the Moon and the Sun separated by an inclined cross is situated above his head. The expressive face of the man on the cross was originally interpreted as the influence of Irish-Scottish art. The Irish-Scottish mission seems to have been active in Moravia before the arrival of the Byzantine missionaries Cyril and Methodius. However the overall artistic conception of the cross and Christ´s attire suggest rather Syrian or Coptic origin. The pendant was discovered a few metres from the extinct Mikulcice basilica and is likely to originate from a robbed grave.
