Today, large quantities of struck or cast forgeries of ancient coins of variable quality are coming onto the coin market. Unfortunately, this no longer applies to the very rare artefacts only, but more and more to the common types of coins where you would not have expected it. To make things worse, you may obtain a fake from a professional dealer who either fails to discover it was a fake, or sells it later at a discount and without guarantee. There is no comprehensive literature available to us, in which collectors, map out the existing fakes.

Most collectors are not well acquainted with the technology and history of making ancient coins and many are not experienced enough to be able to determine whether the coins they possess are genuine or not. Being enthusiasts they may buy a fake from time to time or even dig it up it in the fields of Eastern Europe :). With the rapid development of information technology everybody has access to information but at the same time an anonymous person can sell coins of dubious origin. A beginner may, when he discovers that he has bought more fakes than originals, turn his back on his beloved hobby in disgust. The situation is such that more and more people get fed up and lose their faith in anyone and anything connected with numismatics. All of the above may be the reasons why some collectors occasionally buy replicas of ancient coins. Others may use a quality replica to fill in an “empty place” in their collection instead of the unaffordable original.
